A garage can be a great place to host Thanksgiving because there's enough room for everyone once you remove the cars. Since your garage isn't exactly a festive space, we recommend decorating for the season. Remove everything large from the garage at least a week in advance so you have time to clean and decorate, both inside and out.
1. Garage Door Display
You create a fall display for the front door of your home, so why not the garage? The same elements you put by the front door work well in front of the garage. Our favorite Thanksgiving garage door display elements include mums, pumpkins, hay bales, and corn stalks. Fall wreaths are lovely, but are best left for a side door since the opening and closing of your garage door will damage the wreath.
2. Kid-Friendly Thanksgiving Garage Decor
Thanksgiving may not be as mischievous as Halloween, but there's no reason not to get the children involved in decorating for Thanksgiving. Scarecrows are seasonally appropriate, kid-friendly decor that can be as elaborate or as simple as you like. Stuff hay or fall leaves inside old clothing to make a scarecrow. Finish with a pumpkin head. Pose your scarecrow near the garage so anyone who pulls into your driveway will see it.
Inflatables are also classic, child-friendly decor. Once limited to Christmas, they are now available for all seasons. From pilgrims and pumpkins to turkeys, inflatable Thanksgiving decorations bring out the kid in everyone. Our only caution here is that inflatables can be large when they're set up, and you'll want to make sure that guests can still access the garage interior.
3. Wall Decor
If your walls are blank, it's the perfect canvas for hanging Thanksgiving decorations. If your walls aren't blank -- say, you have tools hanging from pegboard, cover the pegboard with a sheet and then attach decor to the sheet.
For a natural look, consider hanging autumn leaves or decorative stalks of corn from the wall.
If you're in a rush, look for store-bought paper decor with seasonal themes, such as turkeys, pumpkins, or autumn leaves. Children's wall art always brings a smile, so if you have little ones why not share their holiday-themed school art projects in the garage?
4. Table Decor
Set up folding tables and chairs, then cover the table with a seasonal tablecloth. You'll want to leave plenty of room for all the food, so keep any tabletop decor small. Miniature gourds are a perfect idea. Place larger gourds, pumpkins, or a cornucopia on any sideboard tables (say, your garage workspace - covered with a Thanksgiving-inspired tablecloth).
5. Lighting
Don't overlook lighting, as your existing garage lighting may not be sufficient for a dinner party. Candles can be elegant, but they do pose a fire risk. Look for battery-operated candles or hang string lights from the walls to add additional lighting.
